Windows LPR (Line Printer Remote Protocol) Printing

Did you know you can print from a Windows computer using the same methods as on a Macintosh? All you need to do is add a printer and configure it to use the LPR protocol to send your print jobs to the queue - using the instructions below. Note: The following instructions are based on Windows XP Professional and may vary slightly based on Operating System.

To begin, ensure that you have LPR printing capabilities installed:

  1. Click Start and select Control Panels.
  2. If necessary, click Switch to Classic View.
  3. Double-click on Add or Remove Programs.
  4. On the left side, click on Add/Remove Windows Components.
  5. Scroll down. Next, place a check in Other Network File and Print Services and select Details.
  6. Select the check box next to Print Services for Unix and click Next. Click Finish.
  7. Close Add or Remove Programs window. Close the Control Panels window.

After you have completed the above, you can begin to set up the printer itself:

  1. Select the Start button in the lower left and browse to the Printers and Faxes folder under Settings

  2. Right Click on the Printers and Faxes folder and select Add Printer

  3. Click Next and then select Local printer attached to this computer

  4. Click Next and then select Create a new port

  5. Scroll down to LPR port

  6. Click Next

    • For the 'Name or address of server providing LPD', enter the Printer IP in the table below

    • For the 'Name of printer or print queue on that server' enter the Queue Name

  7. Click Next

  8. Depending on which device you wish to use, you may need to install its specific print driver. To begin installing the driver, download the corresponding device driver to your hard drive (C:) desktop.

  9. Once the driver has been downloaded, select Have Disk in the Add Printer Wizard. Browse to your desktop, and select the .INF file in the driver folder. Then select Open and OK. A box will then appear asking you to select the manufacturer and model of your printer. Please select the corresponding choice:

    • For a  Canon Image Runner 3300, select Canon iR2200-3300 PCL5e and then Next

    • For any Lexmark device, select Lexmark Universal and then Next

      • If you are adding a color queue, you must add the color printing feature after you install the queue. Go into printer 'Properties' > 'Installed Options' and add 'Color Printing'.

  10. You will then be prompted to name this printer. We recommend using the actual Queue Name so as to prevent confusion, but you may name it whatever you wish.

  11. And lastly, we finish the installation. Use the default values for the rest of the prompts, unless you need to enable special features or wish to make sure that everything is working correctly by printing a test page.

IMPORTANT: With the upgrade to Pharos Uniprint 8.0, our queues are no longer categorized by building name. They are now based on which server they reside on. With Uniprint 8.0, all of the queues utilizing the same drivers (i.e. the Duplex queues) are linked between the two servers, so you can essentially print from anywhere on campus to anywhere on campus. For a full listing of which locations are covered by which server, please see below.
